3 Jaws Normal workshop tools: a standard 3-jaw gear/bearing puller or a universal 3-jaw oil filter wrench. 1. Standard 3-Jaw Gear & Bearing Puller This is the most common mechanical extractor found in a garage. It uses a central threaded drive screw to pull tightly pressed parts off an automotive shaft.
- What it does: Safely removes components like wheel bearings, pulleys, alternator gears, steering columns, and flywheels.
- "Normal" Features: Standard models feature reversible jaws. You can flip the feet around for either an internal pull (gripping from the inside of a tube or bore) or an external pull (gripping the outer edge of a gear).
- Common Sizes: Measured by arm length—typically 3-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch models for standard automotive engine and suspension work. 2. Universal 3-Jaw Oil Filter Wrench If you are looking for a regular oil change tool, this is the default self-adjusting option for tight spaces.
- What it does: Removes stubborn, over-tightened canister oil filters.
- "Normal" Features: Driven by a standard 3/8-inch square socket ratchet or extension bar. As you turn the ratchet counter-clockwise, the three spring-loaded or geared jaws automatically spiral shut and bite into the metal filter wall to prevent slipping.
- Clamping Range: Usually universal, covering filters from roughly 2.5 inches to 3.8 inches (65mm to 110mm)
